If you don’t already clean your makeup brushes regularly, you might want to start. A 2013 study from Loyola Marymount University found that after one month, brush bacteria had increased to a number too high to measure. Eek! Thankfully, washing your brushes is really easy to do, no pricey products required.
Making your own brush cleaner requires only a few simple ingredients, and helps prevent the gross stuff from building up. Witch hazel is a natural cleanser, apple cider vinegar disinfects, and olive oil helps bristles stay soft. You’ll really notice the difference when a freshly washed brush sweeps on your favorite eye shadow. Your makeup (and your skin!) will thank you.
1 cup distilled water
½ cup witch hazel
2 teaspoons castile soap
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Mix together all ingredients in a large jar or container.
To use, pour a small amount into a jar. Soak brush bristles for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse in cold water; reshape and let dry.
Store the leftover solution in a sealed jar or container, and use for up to two weeks, and just give it a shake before each use.
